Conversations with a Taxi Driver

Alitaptap

Barely a year ago, my work allowed me to go to Malaysia for almost two months.

On my arrival I had a chat with the limo driver who picked me up from the airport. We first talked about his training as a driver, he said that they are required study different countries so they can converse well with their guests. We talked about the history of America, Europe, Asia and of course Malaysia.
Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia Then we moved on to oil prices in different countries and the top selling cars in their streets. The conversation later on moved to the Philippines. He asked me “why is it that there are no Filipino cars? “. He said that the Chinese already have cars (Cherry, Chana, Great wall, and Foton just to name a few), the Indians also has their own local cars (during that time Tata motors just announced that they have created the cheapest car), and of course Malaysia already has two local cars (Perodua and Proton). At the back of my mind, I’m not sure if he knows that as early as 1954, Dr. Greogorio Y. Zara of FEATI university invented the alcohol – based aircraft engine and that in 1961 “General Marex” the electronic robot was introduced in the 1961 FEATI university Science Fair.
Sadly, the glory we had in the past will not merit our present reputation. I just told him that probably in 20 years we can produce our own local cars. He told me that we are too much delayed already and that in five years we should already be producing cars or else we would be completely left behind by everyone. I told him, that our people are still busy with more important things. Then he asked me another painful question, do you love your president? Why is she still in power? It so easy to answer this question if you’re a Filipino talking to a fellow Filipino in your own country, but things are different once your out and talking to a foreigner. I refused to answer that question, it’s a trap. The whole world knows how corrupt our government is, and for a corrupt government to stay in power reflects the kind people of that country. As what Rizal said “Tal pueblo, Tal gobyerno”. I never knew that dodging questions are to be the first skills I need to acquire in my deployment. The long travel from the airport to the hotel finally came to an end, before I left the limo I gave him an unusually large tip, not because I can afford it, but because I wanted to redeem the reputation of my countrymen.
Proton The next day I took another cab going to work, the cab driver was unusually hostile. I tried to chat with the guy but there is a noticeable anger in his attitude. I told him I’m not from Malaysia. He said that the moment I opened my mouth he already knew that I am a Filipino. He asked me, “Why is it that there are more than ten thousand Filipino domestic helpers in Malaysia leaving their families for MYR 800 (PHP 10,400) a month?”. Then I understood why he is angry; he wasn’t talking to me as a customer, but he was talking to me as a Filipino. I needed to dodge this question, it’s just too painful to answer.
I asked him how he knew about it? He said he knows where the Filipinas hang out, he told me, in a very angry voice, that he knows some married Filipinas who are still looking for Malaysian Husbands. At first I pitied the guy, coz he looked like he was victimized by that. But soon I pitied the broken Filipino families, the motherless children and the wifeless husbands. I wanted to give the taxi driver a large tip, but he refused the tip but instead gave me a discount. How can I blame him? No matter how high you are, you can only be as high as the least of your countrymen once you leave the comforts of your own country. I remember weeping in my hotel room that night. I couldn’t sleep in my fancy five star hotel room. The room was too beautiful, the bed was too soft, the view was too nice (it’s over looking the twin towers). At the back of my mind I was thinking of the thousands of my kababayans who left their families just to put food on their tables. I wonder what kind of rooms do they sleep in, what kind of beds to they rest their bodies on, what kind of view do they see outside?.
Watch the movies Anak, Milan, and care giver and you’ll know what I’m talking about. We call them “Bagong bayani” at home, but life is different abroad. How many families are broken? How many of our kababayans are maltreated by their employers? How many of our kababayans grew up parentless? Is this what being a Filipino means? Back in the 1950’s going abroad as a domestic helper or a caregiver is unheard of, but in just half a century everything changes. I do not think it’s too late though, things can still change. If we Filipinos can just show more love for our kababayans, more love for our country. We can rebuild our nation and redeem our people. Taxi in Malaysia

  2. Philippines Paciana from Philippines Says:

More and more stories about the negative aspect of being a Filipino are coming out. This is a harsh reality, truly heart breaking. But for those of us who know better, let us do our part in helping raise our dignity and redeem our country’s pride..

  3. Philippines janvermeer from Rizal, Philippines Says:

  4. Philippines anastasia from Manila, Philippines Says:

I like this article because it is about a privileged young man who did not distance himself from the sufferings of his people. It reminded me of Nehemiah, a great Jewish leader. :)

This should be the attitude of those who belong to the middle and high classes of Philippine society. They must cease living for themselves only and start using their resources and education to uplift the poor and the oppressed.

  5. Philippines Panitikan from Surigao, Philippines Says:

“No matter how high you are, you can only be as high as the least of your countrymen once you leave the comforts of your own country.”

Oo nga po no?

  6. Philippines Panitikan from Surigao, Philippines Says:

After so much “whining” about–I learned from this article that love of country is not about geography because Pippin (LOTR) went as far as the middle earth but he chose to come home and how he missed home. Nationalism is about giving back to the country that gave you your identity and retaining that identity regardless of the time and place.

  7. Philippines bignay from Quezon City, Philippines Says:

Sir Aldrich thank you po for sharing your experience.

  8. Philippines Karl from Quezon City, Philippines Says:

  9. Philippines PAGLAUM - BXU from Butuan, Philippines Says:

It’s so sad. Mothers left their children in exchange of the dollars they earned from working abroad hoping they can send their children to college and have a good future. Yet in return their children either became a victim of drug abuse or early teenage pregnancy. The absence of mothers or parents are the most crucial stage for growing children. I can’t imagine without a Dad and a Mom at home.

When I was still a child, I preferred to be poor rather than have much but without my parents whom I considered my wealth. They are my guiding hands, my mentor, my protector and my comfort.

I had a chance to attend a training in abroad and one of the issues raised by my co participants was “Why the Phil. gov’t. allowed their best people to go out and work in other countries? They are so concerned that we might be experiencing brain-draining. I had just a simple reply that may be the OFFER – meaning the salary offered is higher than what they actually are receiving from the Phil. That pains me because it seems we Filipinos are only after of money. We don’t want to be best in our own country.

  10. Philippines eloiski from Nueva Ecija, Philippines Says:

At oo.

  11. Philippines Lampara from Nueva Ecija, Philippines Says:

    Patuloy natin itong ipanalangin.

  12. Philippines Anne from Nueva Ecija, Philippines Says:

I’ve heard this story before and I was too innocent about other Asian countries producing their own cars. I though before, “So what they’ve got their own?” After hearing this one, I couldn’t believe I’ve been seeing Proton and Chery brands everywhere. I was awakened to reality that all we can do for now is keep importing and present SARAO only.

  13. Philippines bibingka from Manila, Philippines Says:

i remember one story…un sister ng friend ko caregiver s ibng bansa…may family xa d2 at my 3 anak…my nanliligaw sa knya na foreigner at alm nun foreigner na my family xa d2 sa pinas…pero ngaun mgpapakasal na sila kase maeexpire n un visa ng sister ng friend ko…ggwin nia un para mging resident na xa dun…and i doubt if the husband knows that…grabe noh? ngpapakababa para lang s visa…ndi na naawa s pmilya nia lalo n sa mga anak nia…ang masama pa ksabwat nia un nanay nia..un nanay nia mismo ang gumagawa ng paraan para makapagpakasal xa dun sa foreigner…

Time will come everything will change. We just have to persevere, work hard and have faith! Go brownraise! :D

  15. Philippines bengeequlit27 from Manila, Philippines Says:

it’s so very sad to hear that we may not instantly yield our country to a brighter future.
    I just want to say:
how many filipinos have already become domestic helpers?
how many families have been already seperated?!
with all the criticism that we filipinos are recieving from other foreiners from other countries,
    it just makes me mad!

the truth about our country is so very devastating!!
for my fellow countrymen, let’s work hard, persevere and fight for this country.
without our nation, without unity from our society.
we can not make it possible for our nation to become one!

  16. Philippines renz_eigon007 from Cavite City, Philippines Says:

All these things happened for a reason but we shouldn’t forget that we are part of it. And the time has come to open our minds, DO your share, and be the answer for the country-(solution and not the problem) .. .

  17. Philippines dayyuman from Baguio, Philippines Says:

    Devastating, indeed, and yet…
Thousands of Filipinos and Filipinas STILL leave for the primary reason of earning money and / or finding a foreign husband.
We must do our best to educate and help our fellow countrymen whose eyes are jaded, and also of course, live up to what we say.

  18. Philippines daphneleila from Manila, Philippines Says:

    >>>so heartbreaking realities and this post almost break me into tears…this is very true naexperience ko na rin yan…at sinupla ko i changed the topic and ibinida ang ibang filipino achiever’s natin na wala sila… Its not too late to raise our dignity as filipinos, don’t let these negative thought of this other races bother us, yes there are really kabayan’s that are stupid, there is still hope for all of us.. sa pilipinas at sa mga tao nito.. somehow meron din talagang jealousy na rin kasi ang pinoy ngayon global na, these races that put down us are the very same person who really don’t know our rich culture in the past and mismo inside our home ay narito pa rin sa ating mga kababayan ang mga”talangkanin” but thru brownraise.org alam ko at umaasa ako na mag iiba na ang lahing pinoy at nagsisimula na tayong bumalik sa dapat kalagyan ng isang tunay na pilipino…ang kabataang pinoy ngayon ang magtataguyod ng binitawang salita ng ating bayaning si dr.Jose Rizal” ang kabataan ang pag asa ng bayan” GOD BLESS US ALL.

  20. Philippines dimasalang from Tarlac, Philippines Says:

i realize in this story na napakahirap pala talagang mawalay sa mga mahal sa buhay kala nila masaya sa abroad ang di nila alam ay puro hirap at panglalait ang inaabot ng mga kababayan natin dun.nakakatouch ginagawa nila ang lahat ng makakaya nila

  21. Philippines choolita from Olongapo, Philippines Says:

i was weeping, my heart crushed…

  22. Philippines sircoqs from Davao, Philippines Says:

    I agree with you people.

  23. Philippines Sequan from Manila, Philippines Says:

If no want’s to star today,be the one to prove them that we should, because we are very far from the other country…
But still, have hope, and make other people feel the same..

  24. Philippines PhilippineWonders from Quezon City, Philippines Says:

I agree, life is different abroad, they treat us differently which makes me sad. “I hear the wind calling my name, the sound that leads me home again. The Sparks of a fire, a flame that still burns. To you I will always return.” This song is entitled “I will always return” but for me it has a deeper meaning. Thank you!

  25. Philippines kayumanggi-MJ from Quezon City, Philippines Says:

I’m amazed about the taxi drivers there, they even study other countries so that they can converse well with their guest. Do our taxi drivers here in Philippines even study like that? wow….Malaysians are really Malaysians not like other Filipinos, they are Filipinos but, inside, they are not…

  26. Philippines TrustFilipinos12 from Quezon City, Philippines Says:

I was surprised when I read that the taxi drivers even study other countries so that they can converse well with their guests. Yesterday somebody told me that we used to be better than the Malaysians but now it’s the opposite. The Malaysians seem to be better than us. But I believe that we can still be better. We can only do this if we start understanding why Jose Rizal lived. We also can do this if we only have hope.

  27. Philippines pilipino.ako 6-A from Rizal, Philippines Says:

  28. Philippines mantitaw from Quezon City, Philippines Says:

My heart was struck after reading this article. It shows how other countries look at us. The taxi driver was right that we send caregivers to their country, but why don’t our people take care of our 7,107 islands? even though we are not paid by people, we can still do this job if we love our country. It is so dissapointing that we are just caregivers to the eyes of other people. We are only exporting dried mangoes and pastillas to other countries. We should export cars. we can do it. we are BrownRaise

  29. Philippines danieldagohoy from Quezon City, Philippines Says:

I have a dream that one day my nation will arise from wickedness and rise with the great nations of asia even I’m young I believe that the Philippines will rise like Malaysia…..

  30. Saudi Arabia Ishreh from Ar Riyad, Saudi Arabia Says:

EVIL PREVAILS WHEN GOOD PEOPLE DO NOTHING”

Kaya nga tutuo yung sinasabing “EVIL PREVAILS WHEN GOOD PEOPLE DO NOTHING”.

  31. Philippines doris_07 from Bulacan, Philippines Says:

  32. Philippines PilipinoWarrior1 from Quezon City, Philippines Says:

Malaysia, Malaysia is rising because of the 3 factors. 1st- COURAGE “without courage there will be no PETRONAS,NO WAWASAN 2020, NO EVERYTHING” – Andrei Valerio
2nd- Wawasan 2020- without Malaysia’s WAWASAN 2020 Malaysia would not have made it this far
3rd- Angkasawan- achieving a dream with courage and vision
Without these 3 factors Malaysia would never make it this far

Like what I said “A life worth living is full of passion and intensity.” We can be like Malaysia only if we have a passion. What’s the point in living if you dont have a passion? Unlike us Filipinos, Malaysians have a VISION. I also learned in class that ” Without VISION, the people PERISH”

    Thank You!

  33. Philippines OneLastStand from Quezon City, Philippines Says:

I am an American but I realize that Filipinos have a future, a future to be just like Malaysia or maybe higher than that. I only have one thing to tell you Filipinos. Live your life doing good things, not being lazy. You are wasting such a precious time given to you. Be useful of what you have. DO NOT BE LAZY.I know you can do it! Filipinos are NOT CRAZY! Spain just took your history away..So now it’s time to show what you ALL ARE CAPABLE OF DOING.

dont forget with ONE LAST STAND you will NEVER FALL.

Who loves transportation, pwede ba gumawa na tayo ng sarili natin. even a Malaysian taxi driver would know what to do!

  35. Philippines BAKAS from Rizal, Philippines Says:

  36. Philippines Jofaye from Quezon City, Philippines Says:

It is relly heartbreaking to know that Fiipinos can give a lot more than it is today and still we don not pursue to ge it. I think it is only natural for that cab driver to get angry because he has a point. Why can’t we just stay in our country and make it progressive so that instead of us going there what happens will be them going to us? I know that some people may think “your all talk!” I know I can’t do much right now but as a High School student I think it is rightful for me to think that way. Also, I don’t really understand the purpose of getting Malaysian husbands? For me, it is being very very selfish.
-Let us show the world who we really are!!!-

  40. Philippines pilipino.ako 6-A from Manila, Philippines Says:
